education and consciousness
The mind is maya – Ramana Maharshi
Achieving higher states of consciousness is a journey. There is not one path –there are many. And there is no final destination. In an infinite universe there is infinite consciousness. The highest level of consciousness has been achieved by great Masters like Jesus, the Buddha, Mohammed, and my own guru Paramhansa Yogananda.
The journey to higher levels of consciousness takes us through different levels of functioning in the world.
At the base level –selfish egocentric behaviours which may include lying, stealing, violence etc to get what one wants.
On a higher level - an appreciation of others needs, that we are all doing the best we can, all seeking happiness even if we are sometimes misguided in our searching.
On a higher level - a willingness to move out of ego-centric behaviours towards more compassionate and considerate behaviours –cooperation between individuals and groups for the greater good.
On a higher level - our focus shifts from "self" to serving the greater good and we recognise the connectedness of all beings and of all life.
On a higher level - we recognise that there is an intelligent and cohesive energy flowing through the universe with which we can be in harmony; and when we are in harmony with that flow life becomes more joyful, loving and peaceful. Some may call that intelligence the collective unconscious, global consciousness, Truth or Love, or Light or the Source of all that is, or Divine Mother, or God. At this point we stumble in trying to describe something infinite by using words which are limiting. And so each individual must find his or her own feeling of what that is.
This is the general direction of movement towards higher states of Consciousness.
Sadly, the prevailing educational paradigm and a dysfunctional society inhibit the development of higher consciousness. Both education and society have emphasised mind and mental intelligence to the virtual exclusion of emotional, social and spiritual intelligence. The logical (usually left) brain emphasis of most education systems inhibits right hemisphere development. The left brain is associated with ego-centricity and selfishness; the right brain with cooperation, emotional expression, creativity, intuition and a feeling of connection with all that is. In other words, our education system is, in and of itself, creating a disharmonious, selfish society.
