what's the point?
Do you ever wonder What is the purpose of education? Is it about passing exams? Is it about information? Intelligence? Knowledge? Or wisdom? To learn respect and self-respect, kindness and cooperation? Is it to help youngsters to have a better understanding of the world? Or perhaps the purpose of education is embedded in the Socratic dictum “know thyself”.
Education includes all these aspects and more. But sadly, the overriding goal of most educational systems seems to be the passing of exams. Exams rule! And what does passing exams prove?? Well, that you can pass exams…and not much more. Exams used to be a sort of measuring tool. But now they have become the goal itself, the Holy Grail of the school system. It’s as if we are on a treadmill and no one has the wisdom or courage to step off.
Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire
William Butler Yeats
So what is the aim of a true and worthwhile education? Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel prize-winning Indian poet, philosopher and educator said “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but that which makes our life in harmony with all existence”. Around the world, current standard educational approaches are failing to do this.
